History on West Ham's side as supercomputer predicts outcome of cup clash vs Southampton

West Ham have not started the Championship season as hoped with attentions now turned to the League Cup.

The Hammers are set to face off against fellow promotion hopefuls Southampton with a place in the next round on the line.

The game takes place on Tuesday, 25 August with the Irons travelling to St Mary's for a 7.45 PM kick-off.

West Ham are heading into the clash against Southampton has quite heavy underdogs.

That is at least according to the Opta supercomputer's latest projections.

Among all the possible outcomes of the 90 minutes, a West Ham win is actually the least likely option.

The Hammers have been given just a 25.5 per cent chance of securing a victory at St Mary's.

Additionally, the Saints have come in with a highly favoured percentage of 48.9 per cent.

While a draw between the two takes up the remaining 25.7 per cent remaining.

So, it certainly seems like the Irons have it all to do agains their upcoming cup opponents.

Why Nuno Espirito Santo will disagree with the supercomputer

While West Ham are not in great form, history suggests the Irons will have the edge over the Saints.

In the last 15 meetings between the two Championship sides in all competitions, Southampton have managed just three wins.

West Ham come out as winners on eight occassions, with the remaining four games being draws.

Of course, in this tie, there has to be a winner, with the result of a draw heading to penalties.

Additonally, in the all-time record, it is West Ham that takes the reigns over Southampton.

So, while recent performances may have influenced the supercomputer's projections, West Ham are notoriously a tough opponent for Southampton.
