Frank McAvennie stunned by Mohammed Kudus at West Ham United

West Ham Zone speaking to Frank McAvennie

Two stints with the club and still a firm favourite with the fans all this time later, thanks to lines like these from his autobiography: “It was the tops. The place to be. I wouldn’t give a monkey’s what the pay was. I’d play for West Ham for free.” McAvennie will bring you all his latest opinions about the big news stories from West Ham.

Frank McAvennie has described the goal Mohammed Kudus scored against Manchester City as "the goal of every season".

The Hammers were beaten 3-1 by Premier League champions Manchester City at the Etihad on 19 May in their final game of the campaign.

The occasion also marked David Moyes' last game as Irons boss - but despite the defeat, Kudus made sure to give his departing manager something to celebrate with a stunning overhead kick to halve the deficit.

And McAvennie - speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone - was blown away by the quality of the Ghanaian's strike.

"It's the goal of the season [from Kudus against Manchester City], the goal of every season, that is," McAvennie said.

"Considering that he's done it himself, flicked it up. My God, what a goal."

How good has Mohammed Kudus been for West Ham United this season?

Kudus' sensational strike against City was the Ghanaian's 14th goal of the campaign for West Ham across all competitions and his eighth in the Premier League.

Coupled with a return of six assists, Kudus' haul of 20 direct goal contributions in 3,510 minutes of competitive action in 45 appearances across all competitions is an excellent tally for a 23-year-old player making their debut in English football.

He has been outstanding in one-on-one situations in the Premier League, winning 279 duels and completing 124 dribbles, winning 75 fouls in the process [FotMob].

His defensive work has been equally impressive and has perhaps largely gone unnoticed, too - the versatile forward has made 212 recoveries and won 47 tackles in the league in 2023/24.

West Ham United-linked Julen Lopetegui
Julen Lopetegui has only been in the West Ham door for two days, but is already looking for new signings.

If the Hammers can keep him around for another season, new head coach Julen Lopetegui will surely be delighted to work with such a talent.
