Michael Dawson slammed Edson Alvarez for a "dreadful" moment as West Ham United lost to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

The Sky Sports pundit was not pleased when the Mexican put the ball straight out of play after a Hammers set-piece in the second half.

Dawson feels the moment summed up the Irons' performance as the Eagles won 2-0 at London Stadium on Saturday (18 January).

Speaking on Sky Sports News (18 January, 16:24), the ex-defender said: "It's been well below par from West Ham. A free kick, Alvarez just kicks it straight out of play. Absolutely dreadful. They need to bring some urgency into the final third. This has been so comfortable for Palace. I can't believe it."

Graham Potter tactics fail in West Ham United v Crystal Palace

Graham Potter surprisingly decided to revert to a back-five despite the Easy London club's impressive display against Fulham on Tuesday (14 January).

Aaron Cresswell was brought into the lineup, with Carlos Soler dropping to the bench despite a starring role as the Hammers beat Marco Silva's team.

Potter made several substitutions to change the system after the break, but Konstantinos Mavropanos' red card made things difficult for the Irons.

West Ham fans expected things to change under the former Brighton boss, but the Palace fixture evoked memories of Julen Lopetegui's time at the London Stadium.

The Hammers shouldn't have started with five defenders, and that decision contributed to their lack of creativity throughout the fixture.

Things are only going to get tough for Potter from here on out, with Aston Villa and Chelsea up next.

The 49-year-old needs to bring fluid football back to the Hammers instead of going into games with a conservative approach.
