Aaron Cresswell in talks for Wolves transfer as West Ham United want new defender

West Ham defender Aaron Cresswell is in talks with Wolves over a possible move to the club, with a £2.5million deal on the cards, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper has reported on 19 July that West Ham are open to selling Cresswell this summer as they are targeting deals for younger full-backs after the 33-year-old left-back spent most of last season on the bench.

Cresswell joined West Ham from Ipswich Town in 2014 and has gone on to make 331 appearances for the club, scoring 10 goals and providing 37 assists, with his set-piece delivery a key part of the Hammers' game for many years.

The perfect way to bow out

Cresswell was a major part of the West Ham squad that achieved major European glory after almost 60 years. To leave the club now, after nine years and having won silverware, is the perfect way for Cresswell to bow out and move on to new things.

For Wolves, Cresswell would provide something different. His experience at Premier League level will be valuable, and his set-piece ability will be something they look to capitalise on.

This could be a blow to the Hammers, losing a player with his experience and familiarity with the club and the league. David Moyes is known to prioritise set-pieces and use experienced players, so losing a player who provides both may come as a disappointment to the manager.

West Ham targeting young full-backs this summer is necessary as they look to strengthen their squad and look to the future, with an upgrade on Cresswell definitely an achievable feat.

At Wolves, Cresswell would link up with former Hammers full-back Craig Dawson who made the swap from East London to the Black Country in January.
