West Ham are set to receive compensation from FIFA after Michail Antonio was injured on international duty with Jamaica, as his wages will be covered after the first 28 days using the Club Protection Programme, according to Sean Whetstone.

The West Ham news source shared via his Twitter account on 19 November that the Hammers can use the Programme to claim financial compensation as a result of the injury happening while he was away with Jamaica.

FIFA's Club Protection Programme for 2023-2026 was installed to provide compensation for clubs if a player suffers an injury lasting more than 28 consecutive days while participating for their country [FIFA Website].

The latest blow in a miserable season for Antonio

The season has been a poor one so far for the West Ham striker, with his well-documented frustrations in front of goal causing frustrations for both himself and the fans, and this injury blow has come as the latest piece of bad news for the striker.

This injury is still yet to be assessed, with the severity and length of time he will miss yet to be confirmed, but Antonio has suffered from hamstring issues in the past, the most serious of which came when he missed 132 days in the 2017/18 season.

FIFA's compensation only kicks in after the first 28 days of the injury, so if the blow isn't as severe as first feared for Antonio and West Ham, they may not benefit from the financial ruling anyway.

A bigger blow to the Hammers will be the lack of backup for Antonio, with Danny Ings similarly struggling for form so far this season, while 19-year-old Divin Mubama would provide the second backup option.
