West Ham do not have a contract ready for the former Real Madrid and Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui, according to Jacob Steinberg.

The Guardian journalist claimed on 22 April that David Moyes' exit is on the cards after the 5-2 defeat against Crystal Palace on 21 April.

However, while Lopetegui is among the names liked by the Hammers, things have not yet reached an advanced stage.

Via Twitter, Steinberg wrote: "No truth in West Ham having a contract ready for Lopetegui. Options still being assessed. Can’t see Moyes staying after yesterday though."

West Ham considering both Julen Lopetegui and Ruben Amorim

It's understood that an approach has been made for Sporting manager Ruben Amorim and the same has not happened for Lopetegui.

Thus, it appears that the Portuguese is the frontrunner for the London Stadium hot seat and things are not yet advanced with Lopetegui.

Regardless, the Hammers engaging in talks with Lopetegui as a potential backup option after Amorim makes sense as having a contingency plan in place is crucial when pursuing high-profile managerial targets is ideal.

There is no guarantee that the first choice will accept the offer and Lopetegui's experience and track record in managing top-tier clubs like Real Madrid and Sevilla, as well as his recent stint with Wolves, make him a strong candidate for the job.

His tactical knowledge and ability to adapt to different leagues could be valuable assets for the club.

The Hammers are demonstrating their ambition to secure a top-quality replacement for Moyes, should their primary target, Amorim, choose not to join the club.
