Sadiq Khan plea made as West Ham in 'win-win' situation over London Stadium millions

West Ham United continue to miss out on additional millions with each passing year at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have been in their home for a little over a decade now after making the switch from the much-loved Upton Park.

Plenty has been made of the venue's drawbacks, but it is still the third-biggest club ground in the United Kingdom.

West Ham are long-term tenants of the ground, which is in the hands of Greater London Authority (GLA).

Despite the sponsorship opportunities that come with being associated with a famous stadium, it has been known as the London Stadium since after the 2012 Olympic Games.

But a plea has now been made to Mayor of London Sir Sadiq Khan to change that in a move that could also benefit West Ham.

Sadiq Khan urged to strike London Stadium naming rights deal

West Ham's relegation means taxpayers are now paying even more than they were before for the costs of the stadium.

As per Newham Voices, it is now costing around £1.8million a year.

However, by striking a sponsorship agreement over the naming rights, around £4m a year could be brought in.

The same outlet carries a letter written by Bassam Mahfouz, the chair of the London Assembly’s economy, culture and skills committee, to Khan to address the matter.

“Given that 13 years have already passed since the signing of this agreement, little headway has been made in reducing the annual subsidy of almost £20m and while there is a change in ownership at the club, we need to ensure this marks new impetus on all sides to seriously reduce this public subsidy," the letter read.

“We believe that as mayor you have could influence these decisions in a positive way. Where there are major commercial opportunities to generate income for the stadium, you could help bring partners together, in order to help all partners reach agreement.”

Hammers CEO Karim Virani has previously accepted a naming-rights agreement would be a "win-win" situation for West Ham.

The revenue would partly go to the Hammers and also help with the various financial regulations in place, which other teams have fallen foul of in recent times.

When could London Stadium naming rights deal be struck?

It has previously been suggested that it may not be until 2028 at the earliest that the naming rights are sold.

Relegation to the Championship, which brings about additional games and therefore additional costs, may have forced that decision to speed up.

It is a long process, however, and it remains to be seen when - or if - an agreement can be struck.
