West Ham United wage verdict shared if Lucas Paqueta banned – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...
Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham United would likely still be paying the full wage of Lucas Paqueta should he be banned for betting infringements.
UOL reported on September 6 that Paqueta was summoned by the Brazilian government for a hearing amid the accusations, although his initial hearing with the FA was suspended.
The finance expert admitted that unless there are stipulations in his contract, his wage would still be paid by the club if he was banned, with matters such as this now likely on the radar of clubs.

“You would assume so as the player is under contract unless there are stipulations in that contract,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“Those are things we don’t know from the outside looking in, whether or not it comes into the negotiations, do you ask a player that if you are looking at singing them?
“It’s another risk factor in transfer strategy, as much as we talk about injuries and the backgrounds of players, a lot of this doesn’t come to light until further down the track, there’s a wider problem for football in general terms of how they stop it.
“You’re probably looking at putting it down to another inherent risk in transfers that’s always been there and sometimes you don’t find that out until it comes to light and if there isn’t a regulatory clause in the contract that stipulates payment terms if something like this happens and a player is banned then the club has got to pay the wages contractually.

“You’re getting into legal issues and contracts, but there is always a financial underpin and you go back to those wider risks in the system and this is probably on the radar of more clubs than it has been in the past.”
