West Ham United urged to overhaul major area in the summer transfer window

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham United to overhaul their defence in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers’ defensive record has been poor this season, conceding 71 times in 37 games – the fourth-most in the Premier League.

And McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – believes new faces are needed to solve West Ham’s problems at the back.

“I think we’ll see an overhaul of the defence,” he said. “I keep saying they’ve got to get better but you’ve got to get rid of the defenders.

“Out of the back four, I like Coufal but he’s gone off the ball a wee bit. Maybe he’s trying to cover for the rest of them but [they’re] not for me.

“Just get defenders that can defend. Maybe it’s just me but the boys look as if they can’t run. Zouma looks as if there’s something wrong, his hips are not in shape or not aligned.”

Do West Ham United need new defenders in the summer transfer window?

West Ham’s porous Premier League defensive record is certainly evidence that something needs to change.

Only the division’s bottom three sides – Luton Town and relegated pair Burnley and Sheffield United – have shipped more goals than the Hammers, who have grown accustomed to European qualification.

That will certainly not be possible if they continue to concede at such an incredible clip – they have shipped three or more goals in a single game on 10 separate occasions in the Premier League this term.

While the side’s collective defending needs work, some blame must be laid at the door of the defenders themselves.
