West Ham United transfer exodus urged after Chelsea embarrassment
Frank McAvennie has criticised West Ham United for “not putting up a fight” in their 5-0 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on 5 May.
The Hammers conceded five goals for the second time in as many away games, having shipped the same number in a 5-2 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on 21 April.
And McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – feels the uncertainty over head coach David Moyes’ future at the time, played a part in the heavy loss.
“I think [the defeat] sums up everything about the club at the moment, with David [Moyes] going and not going,” he said.
“The boys have just decided that he’s not going to be there – but why would you want to go to Chelsea and not put up a fight? It looks like their heads are on the beach already, you know, and I just don’t get it.
“I really don’t get how a team that can be so poor, in Chelsea, can be so good – but it’s the same as West Ham. But they decided to be good and we decided to be bad, and it’s just a terrible result.
“You can’t lose goals like that and still think you’ve got a good defence. Good defences and keepers – you know, you lose seven [sic], my God, you don’t do it again. And then you [concede] six and then a couple of fives and then another five there. They lost five at Fulham. They’ve lost a lot of goals [and] when they lose goals, they don’t half switch off.
“Whoever comes in has got to have a clear-out.“
Another heavy defeat for West Ham United
West Ham had developed a reputation for defensive solidity in Moyes’ second spell at the club, but the Irons have been on the end of several hidings this season.
The humbling loss at Stamford Bridge was the fifth time this term that the Hammers have conceded five or more goals in a game, with the team developing a concerning tendency to collapse.

To suffer heavy defeats at the hands of title-chasing sides such as Arsenal or Liverpool is bad enough, but Chelsea have been poor this term and the losses to fellow London sides Fulham and Palace will sting even more.
Whoever comes in to replace Moyes – and it is looking increasingly likely to be Julen Lopetegui – will be expected to eradicate results such as these.
