West Ham United ‘top six’ Premier League finish mooted as ‘fear’ verdict shared

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham are capable of finishing in the top six or seven of the Premier League this season.

The Hammers currently sit seventh in the league table following their 2-0 win against Sheffield United on Saturday (30 September).

And thanks to the downfalls of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea, it is a position that the East London club should be aiming for come the end of the season, suggests McAvennie.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “They have a team that can definitely go and finish top six or seven. There shouldn’t be any fear.

“Manchester United are not the team they used to be, Chelsea are out of the picture at the moment. You have Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Arsenal, they should fight it out at the top.

“Top seven has to be the aim. They’re aiming for top half anyway, that’s what West Ham go for, so why not go for six or seven. And try and win some of the cups too, that would be great. They should be going for top six or seven every year.

“They are in the Europa League because they won the Conference League. If they win the Europa, they’ll be in the Champions League, that would be even better next season, it would be wonderful.”

The Hammers have 13 points to their name, with four wins, one draw and two defeats so far. Both losses ended 3-1 and came at the hands of giants Manchester City and Liverpool.

Manager David Moyes will be relieved that two very difficult fixtures are already out of the way, having also already met high-flying Brighton.

But the tricky fixtures won’t stop anytime soon, with Moyes’s side having tough tests against both Newcastle United and Aston Villa later this month.

In other West Ham news, a Sky Sports journalist has mooted an international call-up for one “sensational” Hammers player.
