West Ham United told to sign Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon on one condition
Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to bring exit-bound Tottenham full-back Ryan Sessegnon to the London Stadium, but only if he can stay fit.
According to Ben Jacobs [15 June], the Hammers are interested in acquiring the 24-year-old on a free transfer this summer, with his Spurs contract set to expire at the end of the month. The Sunday Mirror added via their print edition (23 June, page 73) that the Irons had made an approach to sign Sessegnon and were encouraged by the news he’ll be fit for pre-season.
Sessegnon’s progression at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has largely been stalled by injuries, having only made 57 appearances for the Lilywhites since arriving from Fulham in 2019.
Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He’s a good player if he’s fit, but he’s never fit enough. He’s just going from one treatment table to another, which is not what I would want.
“If he were to play 40 games a year, I would take him all day long.
“He’s a decent player, I think. But he’s got to play 40 games a season, otherwise it’s not worth it.”
West Ham United to sign Ryan Sessegnon on free transfer
Sessegnon majorly proved himself during his time at Craven Cottage, having notched 25 goals and 18 assists in 120 matches for the Cottagers, earning himself a move to Spurs.
That transfer has not worked out, however, averaging just over 11 games per season in his time with Spurs, continuously being sidelined through injuries, much to the player’s frustration.

Despite this, West Ham could still look to sign the creative wing-back, especially taking a low-risk approach with a free transfer. Of course, the club will still need to pay his wages should a new injury occur, but they would not lose out on a transfer fee.
It is understood that a couple of Serie A sides are looking at current Hammers full-back Emerson. His departure would leave the squad extremely light in the left-back department, which Sessegnon would fit nicely.
