West Ham United to seal 'brilliant' new transfer as Aaron Wan-Bissaka update emerges

West Ham Zone speaking to Frank McAvennie

Two stints with the club and still a firm favourite with the fans all this time later, thanks to lines like these from his autobiography: “It was the tops. The place to be. I wouldn’t give a monkey’s what the pay was. I’d play for West Ham for free.” McAvennie will bring you all his latest opinions about the big news stories from West Ham.

Frank McAvennie is buzzing with the "brilliant" news that West Ham are closing in on a deal for Manchester United's Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

While there is still the structure of the fee for the 26-year-old and contractual details to work out, according to Sky Sports, Julen Lopetegui's side are expected to secure his signature this summer [Dharmesh Sheth].

The Hammers have been linked with multiple right-backs since Ben Johnson's exit earlier this window, but Wan-Bissaka has been a name that has stuck at the London Stadium, with a deal now close.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: "Brilliant - good player. I like him, and he can play either side at full-back. He's a good defender. Not the best going forward but a great defender and that's what I want from him.

"The ones at the front should be the ones that create chances. Defenders should just defend, and give the ball to the ones who can play. I would like it if he came."

While Vladimir Coufal has been a regular in the West Ham side for three full seasons now, Wan-Bissaka would be an upgrade on the 31-year-old, without a doubt.

The former Crystal Palace man has experienced a difficult few campaigns since leaving Selhurst Park in 2019, only making 20, 16 and 20 Premier League appearances in the last three seasons.

It seems as though the full-back has not quite made the impression he was expected to when Man United bought him for £50million [BBC Sport], but he could reignite his career with a move to the London Stadium.

Given his ability to play on either flank, his addition could also prove to be an incentive for Coufal and Emerson to work harder, with the entire backline having become far too comfortable last season.
