West Ham United to make sensible player sales amid Bergwijn interest and PSR caution

West Ham will likely to make “sensible” player sales amid caution over any Profit and Sustainability regulation changes and interest in Steven Bergwijn, according to Dan Plumley.

It was reported by Dutch publication De Telegraaf (13 July) that the Hammers will need to sell players if they want to bring Netherlands winger Bergwijn back to the Premier League.

The former Tottenham forward, 26, has been a reported transfer target during the transfer window but with big money having been spent on Max Kilman and Luis Guilherme, finance expert Plumley suggested there may be one eye on the balance sheets at the London Stadium.

Asked if it sound like West Ham are looking at their finances amid interest in Bergwijn, Plumley told West Ham Zone, he said: “Yeah, it does.

“They’re not in a bad spot financially overall if you look at where they’ve been the last years and the European football they’ve had has obviously been a huge boost, the investment coming in from new shareholding, overall it’s not a bad financial picture.

“That being said it’s not like the chequebook’s open and it’s an unlimited treasure chest they’ve got to go and spend, so there is a realism there as well and I think that’s sensible.

“Managing the incomings against outgoings is always going to be likely for a club like West Ham but again it’s positive moves in the right direction I think, it suggests a club looking to grow in the future.

“I’m sure they’ll have to be mindful of changing regulaitons, what’s going to happen with PSR, what’s going to happen if the Premier League pivots to UEFA’s new regulations there’s all of that stuff in the background at the minute, it’s natural that clubs in that position would just be a little bit cautious.

“You can’t just open the chequebook, you’ve got to balance anyone coming in with potentially a couple of sales as well.”

West Ham making smart moves

It is no secret that the Irons are still in the market for additions to bolster Julen Lopetegui’s squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with a right-back, centre-back, striker and potentially another forward on the list.

But, as Plumley said, there has to be a little caution exercised and they have already sold Flynn Downes to Southampton to try and offset some of the outlay on Kilman and Guilherme.

With the likes of Nayef Aguerd and Kurt Zouma also facing uncertain futures at the London Stadium, there is cash to be raised to try and fund some more business.

Hopefully the next month can yield some good work in the transfer department and leave Lopetegui with a squad he feels can get the Hammers back into Europe this season.
