West Ham United ‘settled side’ verdict shared as David Moyes ‘trust’ claim made

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham United manager David Moyes will not rotate his squad too much this season.

The pundit has suggested that the boss has around 15 players in his squad that he can trust and will rely upon heavily this season.

The Hammers are set to try and compete in four competitions – Premier League, Europa League, EFL Cup and FA Cup – over the coming months.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I think there are about 15 players there that are the core, that Moyes can trust.

“If you make too many changes, the players you are trying to bring in, they get caught up and if they don’t have good, experienced players around them, it could ruin their careers, especially in some of these big games that the manager puts them into.

“I wouldn’t make widespread changes, because as I say there are around 15 players, I know the squad is 25, but 15 players that he should be playing all the time. If one needs a rest just talk to him and say ‘I’m leaving you out of this one.’

“But it’s a settled side, it only changes once someone gets injured. And it’s about competition. If you’re out and someone is playing well instead of you, you don’t get your place back.

“It’s so early in the season, so you can’t say the players are tired. I think barring injuries, he’ll have a settled 15 players that he knows he can pick and choose from. I don’t see much more than that.”
