West Ham United set to take Cameron Carter-Vickers gamble with new transfer

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham would be taking a gamble if they were to sign Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers this summer.

According to HITC [17 June], the Hammers are joined by Ipswich Town and Fulham in attempting to secure the 26-year-old’s signature this summer.

Carter-Vickers is one of the most important players for Brendan Rodgers’ side, having made 70 appearances since making his loan move from Tottenham permanent in June 2022.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I don’t know if he’s got the pace, to be honest. I think he’s outstanding at Celtic, but he’s not the biggest lad in the world. West Ham fans will love him because he’ll put his foot in, and his head in, and he’s better than what they’ve got.

“If he were to leave Celtic, would he go back to the Premier League? I don’t know… He never really got a game at Spurs and they were playing Eric Dier instead. He’s done magnificently at Celtic.

“It would be a gamble. Has he got the pace for the Premier League? It depends on how Julen Lopetegui is going to play. If it were still David Moyes, he’d be all right, but this new guy wants to play pressing.

“He’s not slow but he’s definitely not the quickest in the world. He’s not your Virgil Van Dijk, a rolls-royce player. If he were to leave Celtic for West Ham, I wouldn’t mind it, but I don’t think he will leave.”

West Ham United target Cameron Carter-Vickers transfer

Following Angelo Ogbonna’s exit this summer, Lopetegui has been left with Kurt Zouma, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd, with the latter of the three also being linked with a move away.

The new manager looks set to bring in at least one new defender during the summer transfer market, but it remains to be seen whether Carter-Vickers will be one of those additions.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers’ stance on Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus has emerged after being linked with exits this summer.
