West Ham United: Pundit stunned as ‘shocking’ Said Benrahma exit update drops at London Stadium

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie admits he cannot believe Said Benrahma has lasted this long as a West Ham player and the player himself seems to accept his time is up.

Online news outlet Claret and Hugh shared on 24 January that the Algerian winger has moved out of his Essex home with the Irons waiting to green-light his exit from the club.

The big-money West Ham player has left his home which has sparked speculation that he is likely to leave the London Stadium during the January transfer window.

The Algerian international has been linked with a move away from East London this month, with clubs from France (L’Equipe, 30 December) showing an interest in the big-money West Ham forward.

Also, writing on The Sun’s live transfer tracker on Wednesday (17 January, 09:25 pm), journalist Jack Rosser shared that the Hammers are hoping to get more than £20million for the Algerian international.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I can’t believe he’s lasted this long if I’m honest, my God, he’s fallen dramatically.

He used to be one of the main guys and all of a sudden he’s out of the team now and that’s really no surprise because his performances have been shocking.

“I keep saying, you’ve got to take your chances when it comes and he hasn’t. He’s got to be looking at Lucas Paqueta and Mohammed Kudus’ levels every week and think ‘I’ve got to step up now’.

The guy has got all the ability in the world, I mean, that’s why we bought him in the first player but right now he looks a shadow of that player.

“It’s as if he’s accepted that he’s out of the team. There seems to be no fight or urge to try and gain his place back and this news has come out and I’m thinking ‘Yeah, he seems to think he’s out the door now.’

“I was one of those fans who thought he’d be up for the challenge when Paqueta joined and then Kudus but we haven’t got that from him.

“Just go out there and be confident in yourself, that’s the attitude I love from players but we haven’t seen that from Benrahma for a long time.

“It’s not a good look for the manager either so yeah, I’d let him go.”
