West Ham United: Pundit moots David Moyes to get rid of Angelo Ogbonna as London Stadium contract news emerges

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Angelo Ogbonna is on his last legs as a West Ham player and will need to be upgraded quickly.

West Ham are planning on a potential contract extension for 35-year-old big-name veteran Angelo Ogbonna, whose current deal runs out at the end of the season (Claret & Hugh, 3 January) but the club have been eyeing potential long-term replacements should he leave.

Wolves captain Max Kilman, as per talkSPORT [2 January], has emerged as a top target this month but his recent new contract at the Molineux Stadium and his hefty £90,000-a-wk wage package make any deal difficult to do Daily Mail (11 January, page 11).

The Hammers have also been linked with Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah (talkSPORT, 9 January) and young Peterborough defender Ronnie Edwards (Mail on Sunday, 7 January, page 100).

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I’m really not too convinced by the West Ham centre-backs right now in all honesty.

“I think I can give them a game.

“They all look a bit leggy or just lacking a bit of confidence and the position could do with a refresh in the summer, if not this month because it’s becoming concerning.

“Ogbonna’s come in and did okay in spells but it’s clear he won’t be around for much longer and he’s really got to go in my opinion. If the club want to match the elite clubs, they need hungrier and younger options at the back for me.

“Ogbonna’s been a brilliant servant but he’s on his last legs and I don’t think he’ll be there beyond the summer. Zouma and Mavropanos haven’t been on the best form so it’s a cause for concern for Moyes and the West Ham bosses.

“I know it will be difficult to strengthen this month but something’s got to be done this summer I feel. They need better players there.”
