West Ham United: Michail Antonio to Celtic rumours shot down as ‘nonsense’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Scottish giants Celtic have no chance of landing West Ham striker Michail Antonio this summer.

As per FootballTransfers (7 August), the Jamaican international is “pushing hard” to leave the club, with Celtic and Leeds United chasing his signature.

Antonio started and played 78 minutes as the Hammers drew 1-1 in their Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Saturday (12 August).

One player that was not involved at all against the Cherries meanwhile was defender Aaron Creswell, with McAvennie understanding if the left-back moves on this summer.

According to The Guardian (11 August), Wolves want to hand new manager Gary O’Neil his first signature in the form of the Hammers man.

Incidentally, the report noted that the left-back could be followed at Molineux by his current West Ham teammate Antonio.

There is also reported “serious” interest in the forward from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, according to Calciomercato (18 July).

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Cresswell I can understand, he’s getting on a bit. He’s not the best left-back. He’s done well though, but he’s not going to get any better.

“The talk of Antonio going to Celtic is the biggest load of nonsense I’ve ever heard. He’s a beast of a boy, he’ll not be coming to Celtic, that’s for sure.”

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have missed a multi-million deadline to complete the signing of a new striker this summer.
