West Ham United labelled ’embarrassing’ after latest David Moyes development
Frank McAvennie has fumed at “disrespectful” West Ham and David Sullivan for conducting their managerial search in public before David Moyes’ future has been confirmed.
This comes after a well-publicised meeting was held with Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim, while the likes of Julen Lopetegui have also been heavily linked with taking over from Moyes.
The former Hammers man admitted that he is “embarrassed” at the way the club have treated the Scottish boss, with his future set to be confirmed at the end of the season.
McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – insisted any meetings should have been held over the phone or via Zoom rather than making a public spectacle of it.
“Listen, whatever happens, it’s so disrespectful of West Ham to have a manager coming over to speak to them while he’s still in the job,” McAvennie fumed.
“I don’t care what anybody thinks of David Moyes, it’s so disrespectful of the club to do that. It’s embarrassing. I really am embarrassed with the club. I don’t think the supporters would want that to happen to David Moyes.
“Unless David has said he’s leaving and not told anyone yet. If the club know he’s leaving then of course they’re going to speak to managers, they have to.
“But I think David’s a man of his word, if he says he’ll give them his answer after the season’s finished, then it’s so disrespectful for Mr Sullivan to speak to potential managers. Speak to them on the phone, zoom call them, don’t make a big thing about it.”
West Ham United slammed over David Moyes treatment
McAvennie is right, the way the West Ham board have behaved and conducted themselves so publically as the season draws to a close is not the kind of thing Moyes deserves after what he has done for the club during his long tenure.
With a decision set to be made by the manager at the end of the season, talks with other bosses have hinted at what that decision will be, but until it is officially announced, having such public talks is a very bad look.
Amorim has also been slammed for his part in the talks with Sullivan after he apologised to Sporting CP supporters upon his return to Lisbon, with Simon Jordan insisting he would never have allowed a manager to entertain talks elsewhere.

Most recently, Lopetegui has become the front-runner to take over from Moyes despite links with a move to AC Milan after it was reported that the Hammers had offered double the money to bring him to the London Stadium.
