West Ham United: Kurt Zouma contract news emerges, Frank McAvennie is not pleased
Frank McAvennie has insisted he would not renew Kurt Zouma’s West Ham contract this summer despite reports David Moyes is keen to hand his captain a new deal.
The former Hammers man even suggested he would prefer the “no-nonsense” ex-West Ham and current Wolves defender Craig Dawson in place of the Frenchman.
He did, however, insist that we don’t know how he acts off the pitch, as there is every possibility he is a leader in the dressing room when speaking to his teammates.
McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – insisted the Hammers could do better in terms of signing a new defender to replace Zouma this summer.
“I don’t see it. I look at past captains and past centre-halves and he doesn’t bring any of that to me,” McAvennie shared.
“I thought he was a good player when he came, but is he too muscly? He looks as if he runs funny, I don’t know if that’s just holding up his muscles.
“I don’t know what he’s like during the week, but from what I see, no, not for me. I think we can get better centre-halves than that. I liked it when [Craig] Dawson was here. No-nonsense centre-halves.
“Listen, he’s the captain, I don’t know what he’s like as a person, or his temperament when he goes and speaks to players. I don’t know.”
Will Kurt Zouma sign a new contract at West Ham?
With the news that Moyes is keen to tie his captain down to a new deal at the London Stadium, questions have been raised as to whether Zouma has earned a new deal with his performances this season.
The Frenchman has received mixed opinions after some inconsistency this season, with Sue Smith speaking highly of his performance in the recent 3-1 win against Everton, while concerns emerged about his ability to stay fit for an entire season.
This is not the first time McAvennie has been critical of the Hammers’ captain, having previously labelled him “stupid” after a terrible display in the 6-0 defeat against Arsenal at the London Stadium.

As the former West Ham man shared, we don’t know what sort of personality Zouma is away from the pitch. He may be an influential presence and leader in the dressing room, but his inconsistent displays will lead to inevitable questions about his captaincy.
