West Ham United: Graham Potter can replace David Moyes in new Chelsea verdict

Frank McAvennie has insisted Graham Potter should be among the candidates to replace David Moyes should West Ham decide to sack the manager, despite his struggles at Chelsea.

The former West Ham man insisted that the issues at Stamford Bridge are more down to the club than Potter, pointing to Mauricio Pochettino’s struggles in recent times.

He went on to share that the former Brighton boss would be better off working with the smaller squad at West Ham – although he insisted he would prefer Moyes to stay.

McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – went as far as to claim that there is “something wrong” with the Blues which had an impact on Potter.

I like Graham Potter. Someone said about him that he couldn’t hack it at Chelsea – neither can a lot of people, Pochettino has walked in and he can’t hack it,” McAvennie shared.

It’s not the same club as when [Jose] Mourinho had it, there’s something wrong with the club rather than the team. I feel sorry for Potter, I feel like somewhere like West Ham with a smaller squad, he’d be good.

Obviously, I would rather David [Moyes] stay, but play better football. I would love him to stay with his backroom staff, it’s that passion that I like and West Ham fans love it. Just let them go and play football.

Could Graham Potter take over if David Moyes is sacked by West Ham?

McAvennie has been highly critical of the style of play under Moyes at the London Stadium, although following victories against both Brentford and Everton, there appeared to be more of an upward turn which the former Hammer “loved” to see.

However, the boss has come under pressure this season due to the style of play as well as frustrating results, which will have been compounded by failing to beat either Freiburg or Burnley in the past week, amid calls for him to be sacked.

Potter is one of several names that have been put forward in the media as potential options to replace Moyes, and given what he achieved with Brighton and the style of football, McAvennie shares the view of most fans that he’d be a good fit.

Potter’s struggles at Chelsea should be ignored simply by comparing to what came before and after him. It’s fair to say he wasn’t given a fair crack at it, and the continued struggles in West London prove that.
