West Ham United: David Sullivan sent FFP warning as Deadline Day attacker transfer wanted at London Stadium

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham and David Sullivan must be wary of the FFP restrictions in the Premier League as they weigh up a move for a brand new attacker at the London Stadium.

The Hammers could well see Said Benrahma, Maxwel Cornet and Pablo Fornals leave the club before Thursday’s deadline and have been eyeing potential replacements in Al Ittihad forward Jota, whose wages are a sticking point (Ben Jacobs, 30 January) and FC Nordsjælland winger Ibrahima Osman given £17m price tag which has been deemed too expensive.

West Ham have also had to consider their financial fair play position when deciding to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a permanent deal at the end of the season (Jacob Steinberg, 23 January) with the Irons covering the entirety of his £140,000 a week wages.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I don’t know what the situation is with the money and the FFP noise that’s been at every Premier League club right now.

“You know, clubs like West Ham have to be careful and I’d warn Moyes and Sullivan against signing players with no real consideration for the restrictions. It’s a very sticky and strange situation.

West Ham have been keeping things under wraps recently. I don’t know if David and Tim Steidten are on the same wavelength but they’ve got that Phillips deal over the line, so it’s not all bad.

“That friction is never a good thing for the club but I feel we do need another player in especially if Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals leave the club, but whether we’ll have enough time to bring someone in is unlikely.
