West Ham United: David Moyes to make last-gasp transfer U-turn on Danny Ings
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie believes David Moyes will now be desperate to keep Danny Ings at West Ham until the summer at least after his “excellent” display against Sheffield United.
The former Southampton striker has been linked with a move away from the club this month given his limited minutes in East London this season with Wolves (John Percy, 6 January) and Crystal Palace both interested in his services [Dharmesh Sheth, 10 January].
TEAMtalk reported on 10 January that Wolves may look to test the resolve of the Hammers with a January bid for the 70-goal Premier League goalscorer who has looked bound to quit for a long while after recent underwhelming displays.
However, Moyes admitted before the 2-2 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane (via Daily Mail, 20 January) that Ings still has a key role to play at the London Stadium, especially with Michail Antonio out of action for the foreseeable future.
Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He got the man of the match award last week, which was great and well-deserved.
“I honestly thought he was excellent against Sheffield United. And the fact that he came off knackered just shows you how much work he put in and what he’s got to prove at the club.
“He led the line really well, thoroughly enjoyable performance. I know there’s a lot of talk regarding his long-term future right now but I’m backing Moyes to keep him until the summer at least.

“It would be a mistake to sell him now because we don’t have Antonio right now and Moyes needs a striker.
“Whether that could change before the deadline, of course we don’t know but judging by his performance and Moyes’ words before the game, he’s got to stay.
