West Ham United can seal perfect Mats Hummels transfer as news stuns

Frank McAvennie has urged West Ham to complete the signing of free-agent defender Mats Hummels as a replacement for the club’s current options.

According to HITC [17 June], the Hammers have held talks with the 35-year-old’s agent about signing the player on a free transfer this summer, with his contract at Borussia Dortmund expiring this month.

The veteran centre-half, who won the World Cup with Germany in 2014, has recently played in the Champions League final as Dortmund lost 2-1 to Real Madrid while West Ham have been largely scrutinised at the back.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “He’s a good player – he would bring some stability. They’ve got players that he can give experience to because that’s what’s needed. The boys currently there, I’m sorry to say, are not good enough.

“These boys at West Ham are not good enough. They’ve had their chance. [Angelo] Ogbonna came in and never did it, but he was one of the better players. I thought he was decent. They’ve got to go for youth though – youth and experience.

“A player in his late twenties is needed, someone who is going to come in and stamp their authority. If you’re not at the top of your game, you’ll get found out in the Premier League so I don’t want another centre-half to come in and make mistakes.

“But for experience, my word, he would be great to get the boys into shape. But do players nowadays listen to other players like him?”

West Ham United linked with move for Mats Hummels

Following Angelo Ogbonna’s exit, Julen Lopetegui has been left with Kurt Zouma, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd, with the latter of three also linked with a move away this summer.

The Irons had one of the worst defensive records in the Premier League last season, with only Luton Town, Burnley and Sheffield United conceding more in the 38 league matches.

This will be a concern heading into the 2024/25 campaign, one that must be addressed before the season kicks off, and Hummels could be the perfect replacement for the next one or two seasons.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are interested in signing Rangers sensation Archie Stevens.
