West Ham United: Brand new Kalvin Phillips transfer verdict emerges after new saga
Dan Plumley has insisted that the West Ham United deal to bring Kalvin Phillips to the London Stadium on loan was still a good deal in January, despite his slow start.
The Manchester City loanee handed Bournemouth a goal after two minutes on his debut and has since been sent off in the 2-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday 17 February.
Despite that, the football finance expert admitted that with the potential option to sign Phillips permanently, an initial loan made sense for all parties in January.
“I think we have to give him the benefit of the doubt because he has been sat on the bench for a long time at Manchester City,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone.
“It hasn’t been the best start, and I think irrespective of that, even if he had put in Man of the Match displays and scored a couple of goals, the sensible nature of that transfer for West Ham was a loan in the first instance.
“We know that you’re not going to get a player out of City cheap, and it was January, there are other things to look at in the bigger picture of where you’re squad is at and moving forward.
“It hasn’t been the best start for him, but I think regardless of that, he is obviously a talented player and that loan we are potentially looking at what you do with that option to buy down the line.
“All things considered, it was the right thing for West Ham in that window.”

Kalvin Phillips stinks after West Ham United transfer
After the loan move was announced, it was shared that talks are already planned over a permanent deal for the upcoming summer, but that may now have changed.
Phillips could have no complaints as he was shown his marching orders at the City Ground against Forest, and David Moyes will have to manage him carefully to try and prove this was money well spent.
So far, it is looking like the complete opposite.
