West Ham United: ‘Biggest problem’ emerges as David Moyes faces sack decision

Frank McAvennie has stood by his view that the biggest issue surrounding David Moyes’ position at West Ham is the style of play rather than the results he has achieved.

After guiding West Ham to a Europa Conference League trophy and consistent European qualification, the former West Ham man has insisted Moyes doesn’t have to justify his position.

Moyes was originally thought to be ready to sign a new deal at the London Stadium before the offer of a new contract was delayed amid calls for him to be sacked – although he may still sign.

McAvennie – speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone – was asked whether delays over a new contract would mean the boss has to justify his position if he stays, as he insisted Moyes has been superb for the club.

“David doesn’t have to justify what he’s done. Everybody knows what he’s done and he’s been brilliant,” McAvennie shared.

“Listen, we left Upton Park to go to this stadium to challenge for Europe every year and David has done that for them, playing bad football. I know it’s not great to watch, that’s the biggest problem, even when they win 1-0 or 2-1.”

Will David Moyes be sacked by West Ham?

A frustrating run of form around the start of the year was the catalyst for discussion surrounding the future of the manager and whether he could leave upon the end of his current deal with results going against them as well as the poor football.

It is the style of play which has turned fans against the boss, with many left frustrated as a result of the attacking potential in the team which is often overruled by the deep and defensive style under Moyes.

However, McAvennie is correct to note that the style of play is what has achieved results for Moyes – although those results may not be the be-all and end-all when it comes to his managerial position.
