West Ham incident v Wolves ‘Alarming’ as VAR gets controversy wrong

Jarrod Bowen should have seen his goal disallowed for West Ham in their win against Wolves on Monday, Keith Hackett has said.

The England international curled home to secure a 2-1 win at the London Stadium on 9 December, but Konstantinos Mavropanos appeared to foul Santiago Bueno in the build-up.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, the ex-PGMOL chief and ex-Premier League referee admitted that the decision was wrong to allow the goal.

“To make any decision the Referee must See, Recognise, Think and Act,” Hackett said.

“This is a clear foul on the defender and the referee has failed to recognise it which frankly is alarming at the elite level of the game.

“Then I ask why VAR has not intervened because the referee has made a clear and obvious error.

Julen Lopetegui was under severe pressure going into this game, so will be counting his lucky stars that the incident was deemed to be in a different phase of play by the PGMOL.

Jamie Carragher was stunned that Mavropanos wasn’t penalised for the challenge, saying that Wolves had every right to be furious at the London Stadium.

The Irons remain 14th in the Premier League and have created a gap to the relegation zone to ease worries, with Bournemouth next up on 16 December.
