West Ham ‘find perfect Edson Alvarez replacement’ in transfer update

Martin Allen has urged West Ham to sign Angel Gomes as a replacement for Edson Alvarez.

It is fair to say that the Mexico international hasn’t set the London Stadium alight since joining from Ajax in the summer of 2023.

This could see Graham Potter seek out an alternative for the 27-year-old during the winter window with the Lille star now a potential option [Graeme Bailey].

With the England international out of contract in the summer, former Hammers midfielder Allen believes he would represent a perfect replacement for Alvarez.

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, Allen said: “When I’ve seen Angel Gomes play it’s been in front of the back four in that pivot role.

He’s always available for a pass, he plays really deep and in the middle of the pitch. He would, on a free transfer, be a fantastic signing.

Without a shadow of a doubt, he could take the place of Rodriguez or Alvarez. Alvarez has done ok but he’s been lacking in mobility, athleticism and pace to get around the pitch.

He has been short and there is a definite need for improvement on him at West Ham.

West Ham could replace Edson Alvarez with Angel Gomes

There is no doubt that the former Manchester United youngster would represent a real coup for the Irons if he joined on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Potter has made it clear that he wants to bring the Lille man to East London but that could bring to an end Alvarez’s spell as a regular starter.

Angel Gomes
West Ham want to sign Angel Gomes.

Gomes would likely come straight in and become the holding midfielder at the London Stadium and is unlikely to feature alongside the Mexican in the ex-Brighton head coach’s usual set-up.
