Pundit wowed by ‘wonderful’ Said Benrahma, ‘stupid’ West Ham United signing has ‘proved’ him wrong

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has been proven wrong by Said Benrahma, with the West Ham United ace a “wonderful talent.”

The verdict comes as the Hammers marked three years since the winger first joined the club on loan on their official Instagram account (16 October).

The Algerian international, who arrived temporarily from Brentford, was then signed permanently from the Bees in January 2021.

His loan signing came just after the East London club decided to sell fellow winger Grady Diangana to West Brom, which left McAvennie perplexed.

The pundit wasn’t the only one to question the decision to let the youngster leave, with the likes of Mark Noble, Jack Wilshere and Trevor Sinclair also shocked at his exit, as per Sky Sports (5 September, 2020).

The 28-year-old has made almost 150 appearances in claret and blue, with 24 goals and 19 assists to his name so far.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “At the time I thought it was stupid because there was a young player everyone was raving about in the exact same position, and they sold him and brought in Benrahma and I’m thinking really?

“But he proved me wrong, he’s a great talent, a wonderful, wonderful talent. So it just shows you David Moyes knows what he’s doing.”

Hammers manager Moyes has made some good and some bad decisions when it comes to transfers at the London Stadium club. But attacker Benrahma has certainly been a good one, with the winger playing a key role in the club’s recent rise.

The Algerian has, however, taken somewhat of a back seat this season, with Moyes preferring the likes of Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta out wide.

In other West Ham news, a European giant is ready to sell a Hammers-linked ace for £17million, with a summer transfer on the cards.
