Pundit: West Ham United should complete £20m Harry Maguire signing from Manchester United

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has told West Ham to sign Harry Maguire in a £20m deal this month, but says they shouldn’t spend a penny more than that.

The Hammers were linked with a loan move (18 January) for the Manchester United captain earlier this month to help bolster their central defensive options, but their efforts were rejected.

And while McAvennie isn’t a huge fan of Maguire and doesn’t think he’d be a great fit for the club, he knows he would improve the squad and believes the club should do a deal if they can get him for £20m or less.

“I think he could [feel more comfortable],” he told West Ham Zone.

“I was listening to the radio and Simon Jordan said something, that I agreed with. You look at Maguire and West Ham and he’s not a fit. He’s just not.

“You can see a fit and he’s not. I knew he wasn’t good enough and the price tag killed him. What a price they [Leicester] got for him. You’d get £20m for him now.

“Would he go to West Ham? I think he’d do alright at West Ham, but he’s just not the fit. He’s not that ‘wow’ signing. But for £20m. If you can get him for £20m take him. I wouldn’t pay any more than that for him.

West Ham

“It’s a £60m drop for Man United but he’s not playing. He’s still the club captain, I don’t get that, he’s not playing in the team.

“I would take him. I think him and Zouma could be a good partnership. If you can get Maguire for £20m he’d be alright, he’d be a good buy for that.”
