Pundit: West Ham United not too good to go down after draw v Leeds United

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham are not too good to go down after their draw with Leeds, but admitted it was a good point at Elland Road.

The Hammers battled to a 2-2 draw in a hard-fought game in the Premier League to snap a five-game losing streak and leapfrog Everton in the table.

However despite a good result McAvennie has warned the Irons that they’re not too good to be relegated, with manager David Moyes told that he must sort things out in the attacking third of the pitch while claiming key players don’t look interested.

West Ham

“A point just doesn’t do it,” he told West Ham Zone.

“How can you go from challenging in Europe for three years in a row? Players have come in, but they’re just not good enough. Scamacca I like, the Brazilian (Paqueta) I like, but you’ve got to play the way they play.

“You can’t just say we’re going to lob it up in midfield for him to head on. Really? That’s not the West Ham way, but I don’t know what the West Ham way is anymore.

“You’ve got to get Bowen, Fornals, Benrahma, you’ve got to get them on the ball.

“I think something has seriously got to be done. Bowen has not kicked a ball since he didn’t get in the England team. I’m thinking something has got to be done there, because we’ve got lots of talent.

Declan, he’s not looked interested. And that’s wrong, because of what he said at the World Cup people will say he’s not interested but he is. But for some reason he’s not getting on the ball, he’s not stamping his authority on the game.

West Ham

“That’s five players I’ve mentioned just without even the defenders. I think he’s got to sort the defence out.

“I know what I thought about Cresswell at the beginning but he’s getting caught left, right and centre now. He’s got to work on the defence, because since Stuart Pearce left they’ve been all over the place.

Going to Elland Road, that’s a good point because they’ve been playing well. But once again we’re talking about West Ham being in the relegation places.

“People keep saying that they’re too good to go down, but trust me they’re not.

“It’s not a good feeling. It’s not good for the club.”
