Pundit: West Ham United ‘don’t have the funds’ to be busy in January despite struggles
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie doesn’t expect West Ham to be busy during the January transfer window because “they don’t have the funds”.
The Hammers have been linked with several players to bolster their squad after a poor start to the season has left them in a battle against relegation despite spending over £170m during the summer.
But because of that outlay in the summer, McAvennie believes there is no money left to spend despite the club needing someone to come in and improve their starting lineup.

“I think they’ve got a good squad there,” he told West Ham Zone.
“You see that first eleven, they can take on anyone and hold their own. And I think that’s what they’re going to be looking at. Getting everybody fit again and go on a challenge.
“They’ve now got Scamacca and Antonio, they only had Antonio before so now they’ve got two. Paqueta likes playing with Scamacca because he’s more his kind of player.
“I don’t know, he seems that way to me. Sometimes the midfield can form a wee partnership, that’s what they do.
“I just don’t think they’ll buy in January, I don’t think they’ve got the funds. They bought a lot of players, [eight] players I think, there’s no players coming in.

“If you get one of them who is going to make it as a first-team regular, but you need more than that I think.
“You might get Soucek back playing well. If you get everyone back playing well then they don’t need many more players.
“They’ve got to come back to the form that they’ve been in over the years. It’s got them to the semi-final of the Europa League and all that, so that’s what you need.
“They’ve got good players, they’ve got it in them. David now needs to get it out of them.”
