Pundit warns Everton against Michail Antonio signing as West Ham United transfer news emerges

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham striker Michail Antonio would not suit Everton well as they try to bring the player to Goodison Park this summer.

According to The Guardian (2 August), the Toffees want to sign the Jamaican international as a replacement for Demarai Gray, who has reached a verbal agreement to join Fulham.

The link comes amid news that Antonio wants to quit the London Stadium this summer “to explore pastures news,” according to The Mirror (2 August).

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Everton need somebody who can score a lot of goals, and he is not the kind of player who scores a lot of goals.

“He will score goals, but he won’t be a number nine, he won’t be that kind of striker for Everton. And they are in a worse position than West Ham, they were creating fewer chances.

“There is no doubting the boy will work his socks off wherever he goes, even if that is still at the London Stadium.”

West Ham

Antonio has been a superb servant since joining the East London side from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2015.

The Jamaican striker has made 276 appearances in claret and blue, scoring 75 goals and registering 43 assists in that time.

In other West Ham news, a BBC journalist has name-dropped Premier League giants Chelsea in a Hammers transfer verdict.
