Pundit wants West Ham United to sign ‘outstanding’ Harry Maguire, England career on line

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Manchester United defender Harry Maguire should move to West Ham to improve his chances of staying in the England squad.

The centre-back has remained a key player for Three Lions manager Gareth Southgate in recent times despite not playing regularly at club level.

West Ham believe they have a full agreement with the Red Devils to sign the defender, but his move has stalled as his Old Trafford exit has not been resolved [Sky Sports, 15 August].

Former Hammers man McAvennie has suggested that a move to the London Stadium certainly makes sense for the “outstanding” defender.

The pundit also urged fans of the East London club to forget about the player’s recent experience in Manchester, and instead remember his top displays for the England national team.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Maguire needs to play or he won’t be in the England squad. There are only so many times that Southgate can keep picking him. If he’s not playing for Manchester United, you can’t pick him, no matter how well he has done.

“He’s got to play, why not at West Ham? I think he’d do really well. He’s Moyes’ kind of player. Some fans might not like him, but they have to remember what he does for England. West Ham fans have got to forget his performances at Manchester United.

“I think he’s done well for England. He was outstanding at Leicester, that’s why Manchester United paid that kind of money for him.

“Sometimes you walk into a club like Manchester United and the jersey is very heavy. You walk in that door and they demand to win. And if you’re not that kind of player, you shouldn’t be there, some people just can’t hack it.

“I think it’s been too much for him. As a West Ham fan I’d be delighted if he goes there. He would organise the defence, they’ve got some decent players there, and Maguire could help bring them through.”
