Pundit tells West Ham United not to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham have been told not to sign Scott McTominay from Manchester United because “he’s not got that fire in his belly”, according to Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers are keen to bolster their midfield options before the transfer deadline next week, and Scotland international McTominay has emerged as an option if he is made available following Casemiro’s arrival at Old Trafford.

But McAvennie isn’t convinced that the 25-year-old is the answer to the club’s problems in that area and says he’s not seen anything from him at Man United to make him think he’d be a success at the London Stadium.

“I don’t think so,” he told West Ham Zone.

I’ve got to be careful with what I say [laughs]. He’s not got that fire in his belly. I’ve not got anything against the boy but I don’t see anything from him at Manchester United, so why would he do that at West Ham?

“West Ham need someone to come in that’s going to lead Declan along. McTominay is experienced and I’d love to say to bring him in so he can push Declan and push Soucek, but he won’t.

At the moment, for me, maybe the guy might just be shellshocked with everything that’s happening at Manchester United and he’s still young. He may have gone in too early, which is a huge responsibility at Man United. Maybe that’s the case. But I just don’t see the fire in his belly and I’m thinking we don’t need that.

“We need somebody whose got something the prove. That’s what West Ham need. Get someone in that’s hungry. And McTominay I don’t think has got that appetite at the moment.

“Whether he would come or not I don’t know. I’m not saying he’s not a good player, but I just think he’s shellshocked and will he get that back? Only time will tell. But at the moment, no. I wouldn’t think he’s the man.

“David Moyes knows him. He knows him well. If he thinks he can get the best out of him then good. He’s a big lad, he’s got an aerial presence and he’s good on the ball. I think everyone at Man United is shellshocked since they get battered.

“He’s not got that fire in his belly for me that West Ham need.”

The Hammers have already added Flynn Downes to their midfield options this summer, but after losing Mark Noble and Alex Kral are keen to add at least one more.
