Pundit shares ‘tremendous’ verdict on ‘outstanding’ West Ham United man Michail Antonio

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes Michail Antonio has been “nothing short of tremendous” for West Ham United this season.

The Hammers striker has scored two goals from his four appearances in claret and blue in the new Premier League campaign.

They came in the back-to-back 3-1 victories at home to Chelsea and away to Brighton in August, with only Jarrod Bowen (three) scoring more for the club.

The striker’s form has delighted former player McAvennie, who is desperate for the Jamaican international to continue scoring after the international break.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I’m going to be honest, I’ve not seen Antonio play like that. He’s been outstanding, leading that line.

“He flings people about like a ragdoll, it’s great. But he’s not been there for the last year, so it’s good to see him do it now. At the start of this season, he’s been nothing short of tremendous. Long may it continue.”

Antonio joined the East London outfit from Nottingham Forest in 2015, and has played in several different positions since signing.

Now, however, he is leading the Hammers line, and is currently on 77 goals for the Premier League club. Those goals have come in 280 appearances, with the 33-year-old also chipping in with 43 assists over the years.

It all could have been very different for player and club this season, with The Athletic (27 August) reporting that Antonio failed to agree terms with three Saudi Arabian clubs who wanted to sign him this summer.

In other West Ham news, a Sky Sports journalist has shared a “mistake” verdict on a new Hammers signing.
