Pundit shares ‘toe to toe’ prediction for West Ham United Premier League clash v Liverpool

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham United can get a result from their upcoming Premier League clash with Liverpool.

The East London club travel to Anfield on Sunday (24 September) for their league meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s outfit.

Three points separate the two sides in the Premier League table, with Liverpool currently on 13 points and their opponents currently on 10.

McAvennie has suggested that getting players close to Michail Antonio could be key to picking up a favourable result on the road.

But the pundit has warned the Hammers against trying to go toe-to-toe with the Reds, instead urging David Moyes to adopt a counter-attacking approach.

The Merseyside outfit are unbeaten from their five league matches so far, with four wins and one draw, while the East London club have three wins, one draw and one loss to their name.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “If we get people close to Antonio, we could get a result there, I do believe that. But Liverpool are on the up again so we’ve got to be careful. But I’m quite happy with our defence.

“I think you’ve got to watch what you’re doing against Liverpool. If you go toe to toe with them, like Man City, they’ll come out on top, they’ve got decent players.

“But we can hit them definitely. These are the ones that you can expect West Ham to counter attack in, it’s just coming up against the likes of Sheffield United or Burnley when we should be going for it. They should be defending against us, because we’re better than them.”

In other West Ham news, BBC Sport has shared a “tough-looking” Hammers prediction as a “European veterans” claim is made.
