Pundit shares ‘surprised’ verdict after West Ham United 2-2 draw v Newcastle United

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes West Ham did enough against Newcastle United to win the match at the London Stadium.

The Premier League encounter ended 2-2 on Sunday (8 October), and was the last game for both clubs before the current international break.

Alexander Isak netted a brace for the visitors, with Tomas Soucek and summer signing Mohammed Kudus scoring for the home side.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I’m delighted, it was a good game. West Ham are doing alright. This counter-attacking is not what I like, but credit where it’s due, they are doing very, very well.

“Newcastle went there with no fear, and it didn’t work. They were still celebrating battering PSG when they went to London. It was a wee shock to their system.

“Nobody would have been surprised if West Ham had won that. I just thought they did really well. I think it was a fair result, but the home side did enough to win it.”

The Hammers sit seventh in the Premier League table following the draw in East London, with David Moyes’s side on 14 points.

That places them one point and one place ahead of the Magpies, who headed into the match full of confidence after thrashing PSG 4-1.

That Champions League encounter just a few days earlier, however, may have had a negative impact on Eddie Howe’s men for their London Stadium match.
