Pundit shares ‘great’ West Ham United squad depth verdict after summer transfer window

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie believes it is “only good” for West Ham that they have brought in players such as Mohammed Kudus.

The attacker joined from Ajax last month, and represents one of five summer signings from the London Stadium outfit.

Along with Kudus, David Moyes has brought in Konstantinos Mavropanos, James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez and Andy Irving, although the latter has yet to be formally announced.

Kudus was handed his debut in claret and blue in the 2-1 win against Luton Town on Friday (1 September), with both Ward-Prowse and Alvarez making their debuts in the 3-1 win against Chelsea last month.

Mavropanos meanwhile is yet to play under David Moyes, but could feature after the international break when West Ham host Manchester City first up.

Former Hammers man McAvennie believes the new faces will increase competition for places within the squad, which will help the Hammers in the long run.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I can’t emphasise enough how good it is for a football team to have two people fighting for the one place. There is competition for places, and you can’t get enough of it. That’s what makes the great teams great.

“If somebody goes out injured, somebody can come in, and you’ve got to fight to get your place back again. It’s only good for the club that they are bringing in players like that.”

In other West Ham news, Paul Merson has shared a ridiculous verdict on new Hammers star Ward-Prowse.
