Pundit rages at ‘Stupid’ Flynn Downes incident in West Ham United 3-0 loss v Manchester City

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie has fumed at Flynn Downes and Angelo Ogbonna for their “stupid” errors in West Ham United’s 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

The Hammers defended really well in the first half to go into the break level, but collapsed after half-time as Nathan Ake headed home the opener just minutes into the second half.

And McAvennie believes it’s mistakes like Downes’ tackle that led to the free-kick and Ogbonna’s error to step back too early are part of the reason why the team are in the position they’re in in the table.

“The first goal, it was Downes’ tackle. It was a stupid foul,” he told West Ham Zone.

“He’s a good player but he’s got to learn off that because you can’t give stupid fouls like that away.

You’ve got to grow from it. Ogbonna got tired and he’s the one that played everyone on. So it was just stupid little mistakes.

These are the types of errors that need to be cut out if West Ham are to avoid another relegation battle next season.

Downes came in for the sick Declan Rice and showed why McAvennie doesn’t feel that he is ready to step up with some basic errors.

With four games remaining in the Premier League and four points separating us from the drop zone we need to get a couple of good results at least, starting with Manchester United this Sunday (7 May).
