Pundit predicts ‘strange’ game between West Ham United and Aston Villa this weekend

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

West Ham will have a great chance of getting on track in the Premier League when they face Aston Villa in a “strange” game, says Frank McAvennie.

The Hammers have lost all three of their opening games so far this season and sit bottom of the league, failing to score a single goal in the process while Aston Villa have lost two out of three, only beating lowly Everton.

But McAvennie feels that with Villa at home they will look to play football and that could benefit David Moyes’ side and believes that if they play to their capabilities then they should claim their first win of the campaign.

“Is it a good chance to get on track? I think so,” he told West Ham Zone.

“Aston Villa will play football against them, so it’s a good one. It’ll be a good game up at Villa.

“It’s a strange one. Going to Villa Park, it used to be a fortress but it’s not now. They’ve got some good players at Villa that Gerrard has brought in but they’ve not cracked it yet. They’ve not hit the ground running.

“It’ll be a strange one. It’ll be an interesting game. But if West Ham play to what they’re capable of, and they’ve not done it this season, but if they play to their capabilities then I think they should beat them.

Both Steven Gerrard and David Moyes are under pressure to to deliver this season after spending heavily during the summer transfer window but so far are struggling domestically.

Villa will look to get on the ball and that could open up space for West Ham to be able to attack more freely, plus they have several players available now that weren’t at the start of the season – especially in defence including new signings Emerson Palmieri and Thilo Kehrer.

Moyes could also make changes in attack, with summer signings Gianluca Scamacca and Maxwel Cornet yet to start in the Premier League.
