Pundit predicts result of ‘huge’ West Ham United clash v Manchester United

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has shared his prediction as West Ham United host Manchester United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday 23 December.

The Irons returned to winning ways in the Premier League against Wolves last weekend after their 5-0 thrashing defeat to Fulham but saw their EFL Cup hopes end in a similar fashion against Liverpool on Wednesday night (20 December) in a 5-1 quarter-final loss at Anfield.

The Hammers play host to Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United at the London Stadium on Saturday and McAvennie hopes West Ham can continue the “long tradition” of making it a hostile atmosphere when playing the Red Devils on home turf.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “This is a huge game and I’m sure Manchester United won’t turn up for this one, so I’m going for a West Ham United victory.

“I mean, we always like to beat them at home, there’s a long tradition of making things tough for them under the hostile atmosphere so I’m expecting us to put up a fight.

“I’m going to for a 2-1 West Ham win, I’m afraid.”

Moyes will be livid at the way his side threw away the EFL Cup opportunity so easily with some lousy and inept defending against Liverpool but he certainly won’t tolerate it again on Saturday which means Manchester United are in for another tough ride in East London.

West Ham United have only ever beaten the Red Devils on eight occasions in the Premier League with one of those coming last season, with that success ending a five-game winning run for Man United in Premier League encounters with the London club.

In fact, seven of West Ham’s Premier League wins over the Red Devils have come at home, with the exception being a 1-0 success at Old Trafford in the middle of the 2001-02 campaign.

The 20-time English champions last won at West Ham in the Premier League in September 2021, with Cristiano Ronaldo and former Hammer Jesse Lingard on the scoresheet at the London Stadium.

Moyes rang several changes for the Liverpool game and can’t afford to make the same decision in what will be a crucial battle as West Ham United have the chance to move above their opponents with a win.
