Pundit praises David Moyes as West Ham United ‘boo boys’ verdict shared

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie has praised West Ham manager David Moyes for overseeing his 900th league game in the dugout.

As per BBC Sport (3 October), the Scot reached the milestone against Sheffield United on 30 September), a match which the Hammers won 2-0.

The East London club are unbeaten since then, defeating SC Freiburg in the Europa League and drawing 2-2 with Newcastle United in the Premier League.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “If he doesn’t know everything about football now he never will. Fair play to him. He was always going to be a manager, he’s a better manager than he was a player that’s for sure. He won’t mind me saying that.

“He’s done very well. He’s had a great run, and he’s turned it around. He’s not let the boo boys get to him, and that’s good.

“He’s got his own players in, some good players. There are so many quality players coming in. I still think Ward-Prowse is the best signing of the season, so fair play in that regard. Kudus is also a decent player, very good, loves to be on the ball.

“Moyes is making them tight. It’s not the football I like, but I get it. I didn’t like it when we were getting beat, but we’re winning now.

“When you’re playing that way and getting beat, it’s not a good thing for the fans. But they are starting to win a lot of games now, so you can’t criticise it. They are getting results, and long may it continue.”

Moyes is currently in his second spell in East London, having initially managed the Hammers in the 2017/18 season on a sixth-month deal.

He then made a return to the club in 2019, replacing Manuel Pellegrini, and has been at the London Stadium since then.

Having lifted the Europa Conference League trophy last season, the boss has made more history with the Hammers this season after they became the first English club to go 17 consecutive European matches without defeat [BBC Sport, 5 October].
