Pundit names Scott McTominay as player he would ‘love’ West Ham United to sign in January, he can ‘score goals’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie would “love” West Ham United to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay in January.

The Hammers made a £60million bid for the Scot and his Red Devils teammate Harry Maguire in the summer, according to The Athletic (7 August).

Neither made the switch to the London Stadium, with The Athletic reporting on Tuesday (24 October) that Newcastle United could now try and sign McTominay amid the suspension of Sandro Tonali.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I’d love McTominay to come in there. He would be a great addition to James Ward-Prowse. And he would challenge Tomas Soucek, who doesn’t seem to be left out of the team very often.

“McTominay could do that job easily. We should be in the fight for players like McTominay, players like that. All of a sudden it’s a done deal at Newcastle, but I don’t know if he’ll go there, because London is a big pull for players. I would like to see us in for him.

“Because we’re playing counter-attacking football, he would be good. He would score goals and can get up and down the pitch. Soucek didn’t play well and he didn’t get dropped, and McTominay could come in and give him a rest.”

A product of the Manchester United academy, the Scotland international has made nine appearances for the Red Devils this season.

He has scored on three occasions, with two coming in the 2-1 win against Brentford earlier this month, despite being on the pitch for just a few minutes.

The Hammers recently strengthened their midfield, with Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez arriving in the summer following the exit of Declan Rice.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign a £40million-plus sensation, with a January transfer on the cards.
