Pundit names ‘obvious’ area West Ham United must strengthen in January after what happened recently
We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…
Frank McAvennie believes West Ham United should strengthen their defence in the upcoming January transfer window.
The verdict comes after the club lost 4-1 to Aston Villa last Sunday (22 October), even though the defenders have been “doing well” this season.
The Hammers have conceded 17 goals in the current league campaign, with only five clubs conceding more, as per the official Premier League website.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I would love to see another defender coming in, because that’s an obvious area when you ship four goals (against Aston Villa).
“But to be fair they’ve been doing well. They’ve got November and December to make sure that doesn’t happen again. The defence have been pretty good.”

The Hammers have been shipping goals far too easily lately, causing them to drop down the Premier League standings.
The East London club have suffered back-to-back league losses at the hands of Villa and Everton, with a Europa League defeat to Olympiacos in between.
The constant stream of goals going past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola will certainly worry manager David Moyes and indeed the club’s supporters.

The Hammers are now without a victory in their last four matches in all competitions, winning just one game in October against SC Freiburg in Europe.
Things must change if the club are to avoid slipping further down the standings, with a new defender perhaps set to be targeted in the January transfer window.
Greek international Konstantinos Mavropanos was signed in the summer window, but he could be joined by further defensive reinforcements soon.
In other West Ham news, the Hammers want to sign a £40million-plus sensation, with a January transfer on the cards.
