Pundit moots who West Ham United could sign in deadline-bustling deals after David Ornstein transfer update at London Stadium

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie believes transfer deadline day could be busy for West Ham and David Moyes with the club hoping to boost their European and domestic ambitions.

The Hammers confirmed the signing (26 January) of Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips on a temporary loan deal until the end of the season and there could be more before the deadline on 1 February.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein shared on the Sky Sports Transfers Talk podcast (24 January) that the Hammers have made a few enquiries this month about a loan deal for a “versatile” defensive option.

Ornstein shared that the defence could likely be an area that David Moyes and technical director Tim Steidten could look to strengthen after the Kalvin Phillips deal.

Ornstein said: “There is question about the attacking department and also in defence, I’ve heard they’ve made a few enquiries about a loan deal for a versatile defender so perhaps it’s an area of the pitch on David Moyes’ mind.”

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “I think we do need more but Moyes may have to sell some players first.

“If you saw against Bristol City and Liverpool in the EFL Cup, we never had the players to come in and make an impact.

“Lucas Paqueta’s not been there, Nayef Aguerd and Mohammed Kudus are at AFCON, Jarrod Bowen has only just got back and there’s no one to take over from them or even come anywhere near them in the pecking order, and that’s a bad thing.

“We should be talking about that one player that should be putting down a marker to challenge those players in the team, right now, we don’t have that luxury.

“That’s not what you want at a top-end football club. So, I’m hoping that he gets a couple more and I expect he will because the boys that are coming in are not good enough.

“We may need a defender or two, we’ve got in Phillips so the midfield is sorted for now, but we’re all praying to get in a striker because that’s the deal that can get us over the line.

“It’s going to be very busy for West Ham and I really hope there’s some more faces.”
