West Ham United: Pundit stunned as Dharmesh Sheth shares £9m+ London Stadium development – ‘Woah’

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie admits he completely understands Thilo Kehrer’s decision to exit West Ham United and believes Monaco is a “beautiful” place and a chance to prove his worth again.

Writing on his personal Twitter account (4 January), L’Equipe journalist Fabrice Hawkins shared that the German international defender has arrived in France and is set to undergo his medical before completing his move in the next 48 hours [Dharmesh Sheth, 4 January].

Kehrer will leave on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy worth £9.4m agreed between the clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “Woah. It’s a great move for him, my God.

“What a place to live! You can use all your money there, you get a decent wage if you go there. It’s a beautiful place to live, that’s for sure, it’s in a beautiful part of the world.

“If you want to get your football back on track, that’s the place to go I suppose. You can go there and show your worth, I mean, if you’re not getting a game at West Ham United, then the French might be the place to go.

“Again, if you’re not playing, go elsewhere and play your football. I’ll never hold it against any player to do that. I recommend every footballer to do that if they’re not getting game time.

“I’ll never ever say no to a loan deal, I mean David Beckham did it back then, and look how that turned out.

“He’s a classic example, if you’re not getting a game, go out on loan. If Kehrer goes there and proves himself, Moyes will say ‘Hold on a minute’ but yeah, go and play, go and prove yourself, go and show your worth, I’m all for that.”

It’s been a fun 18 months of having Kehrer at West Ham, but there is no doubt that this is the right time for all parties for this deal to happen.

Kehrer was a key part of the squad that won the Europa Conference League last season filling in cross the back four throughout the campaign, but this season he has struggled for any meaningful minutes.

Vladimir Coufal is well ahead of him in the pecking order at right-back with Ben Johnson a clear second choice while Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd, Dinos Mavropanos and Angelo Ogbonna are all preferred at centre-back.

Monaco is indeed a beautiful place to go and prove your worth again and the French giants are offering him a way to get regular playing time for the rest of this season ahead of Euro 2024 this summer before a chance at regular minutes next season too, while West Ham earn a potentially healthy windfall in the process.

Great deal for all parties involved.
