Pundit: Gianluca Scamacca injury not a problem due to limited minutes, expects him to be at West Ham United next season

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium

Frank McAvennie expects Gianluca Scamacca to be the number one striker at West Ham next season after being ruled out for the rest of the season.

The Italian striker underwent knee surgery and isn’t expected to recover before the end of the season, with some speculation he may not play for the club again amid transfer interest for the summer.

But despite struggling in his debut season, McAvennie doesn’t feel that his injury is too big a blow for the rest of the season because of a lack of minutes but expects him to return next year and be first-choice.

West Ham

“He wasn’t getting game time anyway,” he told West Ham Zone.

“I think he’ll be the number one striker up there next season.

“I don’t know why, I just think there will be changes. I don’t think he’s a bad player, he’s a good player if he gets the chances.

“I think he was making runs and the ball wasn’t coming into the box. Strikers just want the ball in the box.

West Ham

“I can see why people would be interested in him, because he’s a big talent. A great talent. I can see why people would want him.”

AC Milan and Juventus have been linked with a transfer for Scamacca in the summer window, but it’s unclear if West Ham are open to letting him go just a year after splashing £30m on him.
