Pundit disappointed by West Ham loss v Leeds United, baffled by Jarrod Bowen miss

We’re delighted to welcome former West Ham United striker Frank McAvennie as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium…

Frank McAvennie could not believe Jarrod Bowen missed the chance to score a late equaliser for West Ham in their loss to Leeds United on Sunday.

The London Stadium was left in stunned silence when Bowen, 25, fluffed a golden opportunity to level the scores late on as the Irons lost 3-2 against Leeds.

Overall, West Ham’s performance didn’t meet expectations and McAvennie feels that fatigue could have played a role in that.

However, he still feels Bowen should have netted that late chance to level the scores to 3-3.

Speaking to West Ham Zone, McAvennie said: “They didn’t look like the boys of the previous week but they’ve played a lot of games this season.

“I’m not making excuses because Leeds were brilliant and they’ve probably had the worst injuries in the league.

I’ve been watching social media and the West Ham fans are not having a go at the boys too much, which is great.

They’re tired and you could tell it against Leeds. They just weren’t on it.

The man you want on the spot for the last-minute chance is Bowen and I don’t know what he was doing.

He should have headed it but if it went in off his chest, nobody would have complained about it.

He was caught in between and probably didn’t read the pace of the ball because there was a deflection.

“It caught him out but I’m not going to have a go at him because he’s been wonderful.”

In other West Ham news, an “extraordinary” offer could see the Irons bag this centre-back in January.
